John Hardy Plants One Millionth Bamboo Seedling in Bali

John Hardy Plants One Millionth Bamboo Seedling in Bali

UBUD, BALI, INDONESIA (August 8, 2017) – Luxury brand John Hardy, known for its artisan handcrafted jewelry, is excited to celebrate the planting of its one millionth bamboo seedling in Bali, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of the company’s ‘Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo’ initiative. Through the program, seedlings are planted as a result of each purchase from the John Hardy Bamboo collection.

On, Friday, August 4, John Hardy CEO Robert Hanson planted the one millionth seedling on the grounds of the brand’s workshop and design studio, situated just outside of the Ubud creative hub. Hanson was joined by creative director Hollie Bonneville Barden, the John Hardy Bali-based design team, and local government and community leaders, including the Head of Environment Bali and Head of Badung Regency.

Through ‘Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo,’ John Hardy has allowed its clients to join the company in its effort to offset carbon emissions. The planting of bamboo helps purify air and water, and seedlings given to local families are accompanied by sustainable cultivation training, resulting in environmental benefits during growing and income upon harvest.

“For over 42 years, John Hardy has maintained its dedication to sustainability. From the materials used in our pieces to the construction and operation of our workshop in Bali, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our brand,” says John Hardy CEO Robert Hanson. “Our ‘Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo’ program is an important part of this mission. In only 10 years, we are honored to have planted enough bamboo seedlings to cover New York City’s Central Park six times over.”

This initiative is one of John Hardy’s many sustainable and philanthropic efforts, designed to give back to the environment and local community in Bali, improving the island’s ecosystem, air and water for future generations.

Established in Bali in 1975,John Hardy is dedicated to the creation of ultimate beauty through artisan handcrafted jewelry. Father’s Day With Four Everyday Heroes

This Father’s Day, we partnered with four one-of-a-kind Dads who embody the Everyday Hero campaign concept. At our photoshoot, we chatted with each of these John Hardy men about the unique and deeply meaningful relationship between fathers and their children.

Modern Icons

Modern Icons

Jason Oranzo and David Root are creatives in the fashion space and the parents to a twin son and daughter. “They have each other, so there’s always a built-in playdate!” Oranzo and Root say of their fun-loving kids. These bold and modern fathers encourage each other to seek the beauty in the everyday, and embody the philosophy that the impossible is always possible when you’re together.

What have you learned from each other about parenting and fatherhood since having your twin son and daughter?

Jason: David is the more patient, nurturing one, whereas I’m more of the disciplinarian.
David: Yes, we’ve figured out how to balance each other a lot better.
Jason: Patience is a big one. Not putting yourself first, and selflessness.
David: Our kids have taught us to laugh at ourselves—
Jason: And to not to take ourselves so seriously!
David: We enjoy life more, because we get to relive the wonder. Christmas and birthdays have all the meaning they did when we were kids.

What’s your ideal plan for this Father’s Day?

Both: We want to spend the day with them doing something low key. We’ll go to their favorite playground, and their favorite restaurant. Doing what they want to do is what makes our day.

Fearless Devotion

Fearless Devotion

Ross Brodar is an artist based in New York City and the parent to a young son. A free-thinker with a creative heart, Brodar is delighted to observe that his son Phoenix has adapted his own “quirky, goofy” side. “I see myself in him,” Brodar says.

How has becoming a father inspired you?

Becoming a father has inspired me to grow up in ways I never really imagined. The perspective shifts drastically because it’s not about you anymore. It’s pure joy. The joy is unparalleled to anything else. I always envisioned being a father but I never knew when it would happen. Ever since it did, it was like, ‘Wow, this is a new chapter.’ All my energy is directed in a different way, coming from a different place.
What’s your ideal plan for this Father’s Day?

An ideal Father’s Day for me would be just hanging out with the family and fishing in the woods. Phoenix doesn’t fish yet, but he’ll learn!

Inspired Legacies

Inspired Legacies

Mike Randa is a filmmaker and father to a young son. Mike’s father, Lewis Randa, is an activist and the founder of the Peace Abbey and Life Experience School. Both independently and together, these thoughtful, imaginative men are artful spirits capable of turning their visions into reality. “My father does things because he truly believes they’re right,” Mike says. Of his son, Lewis says, “He knows his place in the world, and invariably puts others first.”

How has your father inspired you, and what makes him an “Everyday Hero”?

Mike: My father always inspired me to do what I’m passionate about, because he lives by that rule every day. I think what makes my dad an everyday hero is that his life and his lifestyle—he never does things for the attention or the acknowledgement. He gets up every day and spends every waking moment supporting people with disabilities. When he’s not with them, he’s going out and fighting for human rights or planning his next demonstration. He’s always living by a moral code, and standing up for people and giving his life for the cause he believes in.
What’s your ideal plan for this Father’s Day?

Lewis: An ideal Father’s Day would be taking our family’s VW Bus down to the ocean and doing a polar bear plunge. For our family, most holidays include a cold ocean dip!

How has becoming a father inspired you?

Lewis: As a father, the most important responsibility, and joy I might add, is furthering that which nurtures and empowers your children to be caretakers of all that they hold sacrosanct. Being a father means demonstrating, through example, ways of being in the world that are rooted in generations of family history, yet made contemporary by being sensitive to the ever-increasing demands of the present. Being inspired by your son is life’s jewelry you wear each day; it’s the skip in your step, the smile on your face, the essence of a father’s peaceful heart.
What’s your ideal plan for this Father’s Day?

Lewis: I can think of no better place to be on Father’s Day, than by the sea with my family—all three generations. Whenever my children and grandchildren visit, they make it Father’s Day year round. I’ve come to learn first-hand that each generation offers the previous one profound insights into the meaning of life. For me, Father’s Day gatherings put life’s journey in perspective, and sheds light on the importance of maintaining a sense of idealism and optimism, no matter one’s age.

Soulful Bonds

Soulful Bonds

Kevin Saleeby is the SVP Institutional Equity Sales at Wedbush Securities and the father to a young daughter, Iman. He has two children, and believes that being present with those you love is often the purest joy. “Being a father is a gift,” Saleeby says. “I’m prepared to be selfless when it comes to my kids’ happiness.”
How has becoming a father inspired you?

Fatherhood has inspired me to live in the moment and be present in my children’s lives. One way has been through coaching both of their soccer teams over the past few years, which has been pleasantly fulfilling and great for our relationship.
What have you learned about parenting and fatherhood since having your daughter?

My kids have taught me how to be patient, and how to love unconditionally.
What’s your ideal plan for this Father’s Day?

An ideal father’s day would be waking up to my kids, and having brunch in the backyard. Just spending the day with them is what it’s all about.

Breitling, Rolex, Tudor and Tag Featured in The Best Watches of Baselworld 2017

Rolex Sea-Dweller

This year’s Baselworld was a win for enthusiasts. The headlining pieces all seemed to resonate with what watch geeks have always been asking for: case sizes seemed to shrink; reissues were practically spot-on reproductions of original pieces; prices were competitive. There were lots of chronographs, divers and homages to the past. We’d argue there weren’t very many jaw-dropping, mind-blowing and show-stopping pieces, but that’s okay. The best watches we saw this year are nice and reserved — the kind of thing you’d want to wear every single day.

Rolex Sea-Dweller

Rolex Sea-Dweller

Yet another anniversary beauty. But even though it’s been 50 years since the first Sea-Dweller launched, this is no Limited Edition, and Rolex isn’t interested in making the Sea-Dweller a rehash of the original. Rolex upped the depth rating to a whopping 4,000 feet and increased the case size to 43mm, making it the biggest Sea-Dweller to date. Diehard Rolex fans might also find the addition of the “cyclops” date magnifier (yet another first for the model) controversial, but it’s definitely a handsome touch.

TAG Heuer Autavia

TAG Heuer Autavia

What makes the Autavia different from other vintage reissues this year? It’s the only watch for enthusiasts, chosen by enthusiasts. Letting Heuer fans vote on which reference would make a comeback was an inspired move, and the payoff confirmed it. The reverse-panda dial scheme and black rotating bezel are sharp. Though vintage purists might scoff at the larger, thicker case size, inside ticks TAG’s latest movement: the Heuer 02, an in-house automatic chronograph with a 75-hour power reserve, a column wheel and a vertical clutch.

Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante

Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante

Using its stalwart Navitimer as a vehicle, Breitling has launched its first-ever in-house rattrapante chronograph movement, making it one of just a very small number of watchmakers to offer up the rare complication. Not only that, it’s $11,090 — which, though pricy, is a fairly incredible price given the movement’s complexity and in-house status.

Tudor Heritage Black Bay Chronograph

Tudor Heritage Black Bay Chronograph

Continuing its push away from a reliance on ETA ebauches, Tudor launched a new Chronograph — the first in its ever-expanding Black Bay lineup — with the help of Breitling. Tudor used Breitling’s B01 movement but added its own spin: the movement has a new rotor, Tudor finishings, a Tudor regulating system and a silicon balance spring. The partnership will also bestow Breitling with a new movement, and, as ETA seeks to stop supplying movements to third-parties, it’s possible that partnerships such as these could become more commonplace.

Rolex Watch

Rolex has landed at No. 1 on a new list of the “most reputable companies in the world.”

The ranking comes from the Reputation Institute, a research and advisory firm.

No other jewelry or watch company made the organization’s 2017 Global RepTrak list of the companies with the best reputations.

“The annual Global RepTrak 100 spotlights the companies that truly understand what they stand for and how to reinforce the emotional bond with their stakeholders across all the markets they serve,” said Michele Tesoro-Tess, executive partner with the Reputation Institute. “This year’s Top 10 companies come from different sectors: Reputation is a cross-industry asset and companies continuously invest on it because their leaderships finally recognized its impact on business performances.”

The ranking measures the general public’s perception of the world’s top companies on seven key dimensions of reputation: products and services, innovation, workplace, governance, citizenship, leadership and performance.

For the Global RepTrak 100 study, the Reputation Institute measures the “most highly regarded and familiar” multinational companies in 15 countries.

The Reputation Institute’s top 10 companies for 2017:

Charlize Theron stepped out on the 89th annual Academy Awards red carpet on Sunday wearing a floor-length metallic Dior Haute Couture gown — and quite the statement jewelry. The actress, who is presenting during the ceremony, was dripping in diamond accessories by Chopard. Her look included diamond drop earrings from the brand’s “Garden of Kalahari Collection,” which are set in 18-karat white gold and feature a total of 59.9 carats worth of diamonds. She also wore two diamond rings from Chopard’s “High Jewelry Collection.” She quite literally shined.
