The new GMT watch lifts the imagination skyward with a beautiful blue dial that illustrates a sea of clouds at daybreak. In the early morning, humid air forms dense clouds that overlap to create a beautiful tapestry in the sky. The shade of blue is inspired by the sky over Mt. Iwate when it is blanketed by this sea of clouds. A rotating sapphire bezel in blue and white elevates the design while allowing for a total of three time zones to be read at once. The Tentagraph, an automatic high-beat chronograph, is the first watch of its kind from Grand Seiko. The Tentagraph’s case and bracelet are made from High-intensity titanium, which is about 30 percent lighter and more scratch resistant than stainless steel, and its bezel is made from scratch-resistant ceramic. For Grand Seiko, the natural environment of Japan is an endless source of inspiration. Grand Seiko dials often evoke the uniquely Japanese beauty of the very places where its watches are made. And one body of water to the southeast of the Shinshu Watch Studio, the home of Spring Drive, is a perfect example. The dial of SLGA019 evokes the surface of Lake Suwa and its gentle waves in the early morning hours when a breeze stirs the long, shallow lake. The blue dial manifests different colors depending on the angle at which it catches the light, reinforcing the connection to wind moving across and changing the surface of the water.

The coastal waters of Japan are influenced by the flow of the Kuroshio Current, one of the world’s major ocean currents, as well as by the nutrient-rich waters of the Oyashio Current, creating one of the world’s most diverse ocean regions. The dynamic undulation of the waves of these ocean currents is expressed in the powerful dial pattern of this watch, which also uses a unidirectionally rotating bezel with an insert made of ceramic. However, unlike last year’s Spring Drive diver’s watch, which was black, this year the dial and bezel are in Grand Seiko blue.

It’s been 25 years since Grand Seiko introduced its landmark 9S, a movement born of uncompromising desire for the highest precision in mechanical watchmaking. This Hi-Beat 36000 watch shares the same Evolution 9 design as the celebrated ‘White Birch’ SLGH005 but is presented with a black dial that captures the atmosphere of the white birch tree forests on the Hiraniwa Plateau at night. These forests cover some 400 hectares and are located near the studio in Shizukuishi where all Grand Seiko mechanical watches are crafted.
Its powerful hands and grooved, prominent markers ensure perfect legibility. Its Zaratsu polished, distortion-free mirror finish and delicate hairline finish alternate to give the case a quiet and harmonious glow. All Grand Seiko Spring Drive timepieces are designed, made, assembled and adjusted by the skilled craftsmen and women of the Shinshu Watch Studio, which is located in central Japan and surrounded by the Hotaka mountain range whose tallest summit is 3,190 meters high. As the Hotaka mountain range was created by volcanic activity, its peaks and slopes have sharp ridges and sheer cliffs which, even when carved by the wind and snow over the millennia, reveal nature at its most dramatic. This watch’s dial has the color and texture that typify the geology of the Hotaka range.

This watch is powered by a specially adjusted movement, Caliber 9R96, which delivers an accuracy of ±10 seconds per month ( ±0.5 seconds per day). This is the Grand Seiko Diver’s watch to be powered by Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5 which offers an accuracy rate of ±10 seconds per month and a five day power reserve. It is made from High-intensity Titanium, a material that is 30% lighter than stainless steel and even more impervious to scratches and corrosion. To further enhance its durability, the rotating bezel is in ceramic to protect the watch from being scratched. The dial is deep black in color and has a strongly patterned surface, inspired by a particular aspect of the oceans that surround the Japanese archipelago and that are criss-crossed by water currents of great power. One such is the Kuroshio Current, also known as the Black Stream. It flows northwards past Japan towards the Arctic North Pacific and is one of the largest ocean streams in the world. The dynamic and sometimes violent tides caused by the Black Stream inspire the deep black color and richly textured surface of the dial of this new 200m diver’s watch.
