For Grand Seiko, the natural environment of Japan is an endless source of inspiration. Grand Seiko dials often evoke the uniquely Japanese beauty of the very places where its watches are made. And one body of water to the southeast of the Shinshu Watch Studio, the home of Spring Drive, is a perfect example. The dial of SLGA019 evokes the surface of Lake Suwa and its gentle waves in the early morning hours when a breeze stirs the long, shallow lake. The blue dial manifests different colors depending on the angle at which it catches the light, reinforcing the connection to wind moving across and changing the surface of the water.

The coastal waters of Japan are influenced by the flow of the Kuroshio Current, one of the world’s major ocean currents, as well as by the nutrient-rich waters of the Oyashio Current, creating one of the world’s most diverse ocean regions. The dynamic undulation of the waves of these ocean currents is expressed in the powerful dial pattern of this watch, which also uses a unidirectionally rotating bezel with an insert made of ceramic. However, unlike last year’s Spring Drive diver’s watch, which was black, this year the dial and bezel are in Grand Seiko blue.

It’s been 25 years since Grand Seiko introduced its landmark 9S, a movement born of uncompromising desire for the highest precision in mechanical watchmaking. Powered by the slim, hand-wound movement, Caliber 9S64, this refined timepiece is simple in its overall design but so exquisitely finished that its details are forever fascinating. The dial is open and clean but, when viewed through the sapphire case back, the intricate perfection of the hand-assembled and adjusted movement is abundantly and satisfyingly clear.
