A limited-edition watch commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Caliber 9S mechanical movement. Its design depicts the clear blue sky as seen from the top of Mt. Iwate, the soaring peak visible through the windows of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical watches are assembled. A classic form prevails thanks to this creation’s mirror-finished bezel and case, gently curved lugs with Zaratsu polishing, and a box-shaped sapphire crystal. Inside is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9S66. For Grand Seiko, the natural environment of Japan is an endless source of inspiration. Grand Seiko dials often evoke the uniquely Japanese beauty of the very places where its watches are made. And one body of water to the southeast of the Shinshu Watch Studio, the home of Spring Drive, is a perfect example. The dial of SLGA019 evokes the surface of Lake Suwa and its gentle waves in the early morning hours when a breeze stirs the long, shallow lake. The blue dial manifests different colors depending on the angle at which it catches the light, reinforcing the connection to wind moving across and changing the surface of the water.

The first model to be powered by the revolutionary 9S caliber of 1998 was the SBGR001, a watch that embodied all the traditions and innovations that the Japanese watchmaker had accumulated since the first Grand Seiko in 1960. To mark 25 years of this landmark caliber, Grand Seiko has created a limited edition that pays tribute to a critical chapter in its history and its technical progression. The new SBGR325 symbolizes the evolution of the 9S family over its quarter-century lifespan. Through its discrete form and its high precision, it channels the very first 9S-powered watch and instantly calls to mind the early days of the revolutionary automatic caliber inside. The watch’s sky-blue dial evokes the daytime sky as seen from the top of Mt. Iwate, transporting wearers to Iwate Prefecture, the home of Grand Seiko mechanical watchmaking and the place where 9S movements are made.

The 44GS of 1967 established, once and for all, the “Grand Seiko Style,” a design language centered on the idea of a wristwatch with “sparkle and quality.” The new Ref. SBGH301 presents this traditional design in the cutting-edge, anti-corrosive material Ever Brilliant Steel, an alloy with a pitting resistance 1.7 times that of the normal steel typically seen in luxury watches. It’s been 25 years since Grand Seiko introduced its landmark 9S, a movement born of uncompromising desire for the highest precision in mechanical watchmaking. When the 9S debuted in the SBGR001 in 1998, it ushered in a new era for Grand Seiko and it laid the groundwork for the many mechanical watchmaking achievements that would unfold over the next quarter-century. These ranged from the first 9S Hi-Beat models to the more recent introduction of 9SA5, the most advanced Hi-Beat Grand Seiko movement to date. This year, a new limited edition commemorates the pivotal introduction of 9S and symbolizes the continued evolution of this movement family over the last two and a half decades. And it does so in the form of a moderately sized wristwatch that respects the diameter of the 1998 original.

Shinshu, the region where all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are created, was once a major center of silk production. This classic design has a dial whose silken sunray pattern pays tribute to this heritage. The fine grain of the pattern radiates outwards and catches the light at every angle. This modern Hi-Beat 36000 watch expresses anew the Grand Seiko Style. This Hi-Beat 36000 watch shares the same Evolution 9 design as the celebrated ‘White Birch’ SLGH005 but is presented with a black dial that captures the atmosphere of the white birch tree forests on the Hiraniwa Plateau at night. These forests cover some 400 hectares and are located near the studio in Shizukuishi where all Grand Seiko mechanical watches are crafted.
Its powerful hands and grooved, prominent markers ensure perfect legibility. Its Zaratsu polished, distortion-free mirror finish and delicate hairline finish alternate to give the case a quiet and harmonious glow.
