The dial of this dress watch is in a deep burgundy color that is inspired by the rich autumn colors of Boshū, the ‘sekki’ or season when the trees that surround the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in northern Japan change in hue and announce that winter is just around the corner. Powered by the slim, hand-wound movement, Caliber 9S64, this refined timepiece is simple in its overall design but so exquisitely finished that its details are forever fascinating. The dial is open and clean but, when viewed through the sapphire case back, the intricate perfection of the hand-assembled and adjusted movement is abundantly and satisfyingly clear. The delicately textured white dial evokes Asaborake, the brief time when, as dawn breaks, the light penetrates the morning mist and begins to reveal the mountain landscape of Shinshu, where this, and all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches, are made. The minute and seconds hands are gently curved by hand so that they are close to the indexes and minute track. This not only enhances the legibility of the time, which is measured with +/- 15 seconds a month precision, but it also allows the wearer to enjoy to the full the continuous glide motion of the seconds hand that is Spring Drive’s signature. The hand-wound Caliber 9R31 delivers a 72-hour power reserve thanks to its Dual Spring Barrel mechanism in which two springs are set in parallel within one single barrel.

The dial has a deep blue color that captures the alluring beauty of the full moon in the night sky above the Shinshu mountains that can be seen from the studio in Shiojiri where this and all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches are created. The sunray pattern catches the light at every angle and recreates the gentle sparkle that the moon casts over the landscape when it is at its very highest point in the sky. The signature glide motion seconds hand of Spring Drive is in a gold color and captures the grandeur of the night sky as it sweeps silently across the wide dial, bringing the wearer closer than ever to the serene and eternal nature of the passage of time. The minute and seconds hands are curved by hand so that they slope gently down towards the minute track at the edge of the dial, enhancing the legibility of the exact time. The watch is presented on a dark blue strap that harmonizes perfectly with the rich tone of the dial.

Caliber 9S63 is a significant addition to the ever growing Grand Seiko family of movements. It has been eight years since the last manual-winding mechanical caliber in Grand Seiko and it has been worth the wait. Caliber 9S63 offers a small seconds hand at the nine o’clock position and a power reserve indicator at three o’clock. Caliber 9S63 has a power reserve of 72 hours and delivers an accuracy rate of +5 to -3 seconds a day. A classic combination of a clean white dial and black crocodile strap create a perfect harmony. A curved dial with the hand-bent minute and power reserve hand gives the watch a classic look.
