A limited-edition watch commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Caliber 9S mechanical movement. Its design depicts the clear blue sky as seen from the top of Mt. Iwate, the soaring peak visible through the windows of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical watches are assembled. A classic form prevails thanks to this creation’s mirror-finished bezel and case, gently curved lugs with Zaratsu polishing, and a box-shaped sapphire crystal. Inside is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9S66. Assembled at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi by skilled craftsmen and women, the self-winding Caliber 9S66 is a GMT movement that runs for approximately 72 hours when fully wound.

For Grand Seiko, the natural environment of Japan is an endless source of inspiration. Grand Seiko dials often evoke the uniquely Japanese beauty of the very places where its watches are made. And one body of water to the southeast of the Shinshu Watch Studio, the home of Spring Drive, is a perfect example. The dial of SLGA019 evokes the surface of Lake Suwa and its gentle waves in the early morning hours when a breeze stirs the long, shallow lake. The blue dial manifests different colors depending on the angle at which it catches the light, reinforcing the connection to wind moving across and changing the surface of the water.

The first model to be powered by the revolutionary 9S caliber of 1998 was the SBGR001, a watch that embodied all the traditions and innovations that the Japanese watchmaker had accumulated since the first Grand Seiko in 1960. To mark 25 years of this landmark caliber, Grand Seiko has created a limited edition that pays tribute to a critical chapter in its history and its technical progression. The new SBGR325 symbolizes the evolution of the 9S family over its quarter-century lifespan. Through its discrete form and its high precision, it channels the very first 9S-powered watch and instantly calls to mind the early days of the revolutionary automatic caliber inside. The watch’s sky-blue dial evokes the daytime sky as seen from the top of Mt. Iwate, transporting wearers to Iwate Prefecture, the home of Grand Seiko mechanical watchmaking and the place where 9S movements are made.

It’s been 25 years since Grand Seiko introduced its landmark 9S, a movement born of uncompromising desire for the highest precision in mechanical watchmaking. When the 9S debuted in the SBGR001 in 1998, it ushered in a new era for Grand Seiko and it laid the groundwork for the many mechanical watchmaking achievements that would unfold over the next quarter-century. These ranged from the first 9S Hi-Beat models to the more recent introduction of 9SA5, the most advanced Hi-Beat Grand Seiko movement to date. This year, a new limited edition commemorates the pivotal introduction of 9S and symbolizes the continued evolution of this movement family over the last two and a half decades. And it does so in the form of a moderately sized wristwatch that respects the diameter of the 1998 original.

The dial of this dress watch is in a deep burgundy color that is inspired by the rich autumn colors of Boshū, the ‘sekki’ or season when the trees that surround the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in northern Japan change in hue and announce that winter is just around the corner. Powered by the slim, hand-wound movement, Caliber 9S64, this refined timepiece is simple in its overall design but so exquisitely finished that its details are forever fascinating. The dial is open and clean but, when viewed through the sapphire case back, the intricate perfection of the hand-assembled and adjusted movement is abundantly and satisfyingly clear. Thanks to a long mainspring and a balance, both made of proprietary SPRON alloys, this watch has a high and stable accuracy rate and a power reserve of 72 hours.

Most winters, Lake Suwa freezes over and, every few years, a long ridge appears in the ice from one side of the lake to the other. Tradition has it that this is the ‘Omiwatari’ or where the gods walk out over the ice. True or not, this legend has inspired the craftsmen and women at the nearby Shinshu Watch Studio to create a dial of exquisite subtlety for this hand-winding Spring Drive timepiece.

The delicately textured white dial evokes Asaborake, the brief time when, as dawn breaks, the light penetrates the morning mist and begins to reveal the mountain landscape of Shinshu, where this, and all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches, are made. The minute and seconds hands are gently curved by hand so that they are close to the indexes and minute track. This not only enhances the legibility of the time, which is measured with +/- 15 seconds a month precision, but it also allows the wearer to enjoy to the full the continuous glide motion of the seconds hand that is Spring Drive’s signature. The hand-wound Caliber 9R31 delivers a 72-hour power reserve thanks to its Dual Spring Barrel mechanism in which two springs are set in parallel within one single barrel.
