“Today, I did a hard task of having my deceased mother's jewellery looked at. Kran at Knar was absolutely fantastic. Not only did she go through every piece, letting me know what was real and what wasn’t she listened to all my stories of my family. In the end, I couldn’t believe when they told me there was no charge for the service, which took almost an hour. Kiran and other staff were super friendly. I will go back for anything else I need such as appraisals, repairs and purchases.”

OUR PROCESS

What to expect when you entrust Knar to evaluate or appraise your jewellery.

Your jewellery is valuable not only for its material worth but also for its deep personal significance. That’s why we treat your pieces as if they were our own and only put them in the hands of our experienced associates and appraisers. Here’s how our process works:

Knar Icon Large.png

Step 1: Complimentary Assessment

Bring your jewellery to one of our store locations so we can examine it and discuss your specific needs. You may want to book an appointment as this takes some time to complete.

Knar Icon Large.png

Step 2: No-Obligation Quote

Our knowledgeable associates will provide a cost estimate. If you choose to proceed with the work, we’ll provide an estimated appraisal timeline. This timeline will vary depending on the type of jewellery, how many pieces you would like appraised, and our existing appraisal volume.

Step 3 - Photography & Documentation

We’ll take close-up digital photographs of your pieces to document any serial and model numbers for reference. Then, we’ll place this information in our files and your appraisal document, ensuring your jewellery is meticulously catalogued and cared for.

Step 4 - Material Test

We’ll examine each item closely for its material content. Then, we’ll electronically weigh and measure it.

Step 5 - Gem Test

We’ll use specialized instruments and lab equipment to identify your gems, record their measurements, and grade their quality.

Step 6 - Value Determination & Evaluation

We’ll ensure your jewellery appraisals are performed by a qualified appraiser and graded to GIA (Gemological Institute of America) standards. As part of our evaluation process, we’ll also identify any issues requiring attention, such as loose gems and worn prongs.

We’ll provide you with an official appraisal document that includes:

● A detailed description of the piece, including the type/metal grade, manufacturing, gem number and quality (clarity, colour, cut, carat weight, grade proportions)
● A digital photograph of the item
● Appraiser’s signature
● Date
● Appropriate market value at the time of appraisal*

*Value is based upon your needs, whether settling an estate or insuring a favourite piece of jewellery.

We’ll also securely store your records in our corporate database in case you need the appraisal later. Simply call Knar to request the information.

Quick answers to common questions about appraising or evaluating your jewellery:

POPULAR CUSTOMER QUERIES

Typically, appraisals start at around $100. However, this cost varies depending on the complexity of the appraisal required. We recommend bringing your jewellery to any Knar Jewellery location for an accurate cost estimate.

Our jewellery appraisal process typically takes 10 to 15 business days to ensure a thorough evaluation. However, we understand that sometimes you may be on a tighter schedule. If that's the case, please let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs within shorter timelines.

We recommend updating your jewellery appraisal every three to five years to ensure it matches current market values and conditions. However, it’s crucial to check with your insurance provider on their specific guidelines. Otherwise, you may not have adequate coverage against loss, theft, or damage

Bringing in your physical piece of jewellery is essential for a comprehensive appraisal. Relevant documentation, including original receipts, previous appraisals, or certificates of authenticity, will also greatly assist in a precise evaluation. These documents, alongside the physical item, allow us to assess specifics like measurements, grades, and carat weights, especially in set jewellery, ensuring you receive the most accurate appraisal.

Each type of appraisal reflects the different needs and situations a jewellery owner might face.

a. Replacement Value Appraisals are generally prepared for insurance purposes. They focus on estimating the cost to repair or replace a lost, damaged, or stolen item with an equivalent piece. This estimation is based on current market conditions and should be updated every two to three years to remain accurate as market prices fluctuate.

b. Fair Market Value Appraisals are essential for charitable donations, marriage and divorce settlements, or tax applications. These appraisals reflect the price a knowledgeable, willing buyer would pay to a willing seller with no urgency to sell. It’s about finding a fair price without the pressure of time constraints.

c. Liquidation Appraisals are sought in urgent situations such as estate probate, bankruptcy, or when jewellery must be quickly sold as collateral. These appraisals typically yield the lowest value, as they account for the need to sell swiftly, often under less-than-ideal conditions.

Precious metals and gems have prices that can fluctuate. The details in your appraisal clearly define the qualities and attributes of those metals and gems, allowing a consistent determination of value over time. We recommend updating your appraisals every three to five years to keep your insurance coverage current and for personal peace of mind in case of a chip or missing gem.

While it's beneficial to appraise high-value items, not all jewellery needs an appraisal. The rule of thumb is to appraise pieces that have significant monetary, historical, or emotional value, like engagement rings, heirloom pieces, and items made with precious metals and gemstones. These pieces are often substantial investments and may require insurance coverage, for which an appraisal is indispensable. We may also suggest creating a listing for many of your smaller items.

Costume jewellery, while often beautiful and meaningful, typically does not require an appraisal due to its lower material value. However, if you have vintage costume jewellery or a particularly unique piece, you might still choose to have it evaluated for your knowledge or resale purposes.

A reputable appraisal should come from a certified gemologist who is also an accredited appraiser through the American Gem Society (AGS). These professionals undergo rigorous training and adhere to strict ethical standards, ensuring their evaluations are accurate and impartial.

Additionally, a legitimate appraisal will be detailed and comprehensive, including a thorough description of the piece, photographs, the methodology used for valuation, and the current market value. It should also mention the appraiser's qualifications and contact information.

At Knar, we provide appraisals that meet all these criteria, giving you confidence in the value and authenticity of your cherished pieces.

Determining your jewellery’s value is an intricate process that blends science and market knowledge. Our expert appraisers begin by thoroughly examining each piece, using specialized equipment to assess the quality and condition of metals, gemstones, and craftsmanship. They consider various factors, including the carat weight, cut, clarity, and colour of any gemstones, as well as the rarity and desirability of the materials used. The piece's historical significance and provenance are also considered if applicable.

Beyond the physical attributes, our appraisers stay abreast of current market trends and prices, ensuring the valuation reflects the piece's actual market value. This comprehensive approach allows us to provide an accurate, detailed, and transparent appraisal of your jewellery's worth.

For more than four decades, Knar has been a pillar in the Canadian jewellery industry, distinguished by unparalleled standards of quality and service. Our knowledgeable team includes an American Gem Society-accredited appraiser. This expertise ensures your pieces receive the most accurate evaluation. Additionally, we offer one of only several on-site gem laboratories in Canada, ensuring we have the tools and technology to meet our customers’ needs, whether they live in Oakville, Guelph, Toronto, or surrounding areas.

“From the very first time I walked in, to the day I left with my engagement ring, the staff there provided nothing but the best customer service. There are many other independent or big box stores in the downtown area but the service here was outstanding. Even when I needed a rush order on the custom ring they designed, Jeff managed to pull through and have it delivered on time. Craftsmanship, diamond selection, and exceptional customer service are all A+.”
